In the early seventeenth century, don Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl, in New Spain, and don Joan de Santa Cruz Pachacuti Yamqui Salcamaygua, in Peru, rewrote the ancient history of their respective homelands. Scholars have approached their texts separately, but the many structural and conceptual features they have in common have not been studied. A comparative analysis reveals that both authors wrote moral epics that stand out for their providential impetus and the smoothness of the narrative. The differences between the texts are also revealing and, along with the coincidences, must be considered in regard to each author’s particular context. Comparing and contrasting Alva Ixtlilxóchitl’s y Pachacuti Yamqui’s works and circumstances calls for sharpening their characterization as cultural mestizos in conflict.
