The different discourses about the American nature in the Spanish Chronicles of the Indies represent one of the first stages in the construction of the identity of the “idea” of America. The usual discursive characterization of the American natural space in the Indian historiography, projected through the rhetoricaldiscursive codes accumulated by the Western culture, shows some identity differences. This article studies the representation of the discourse of abundance in Pedro Mártir de Anglería, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
