La aurora en el Occidente is a dramatization of Saint Juan Diego’s story, the Marian apparitions he witnessed and the requests he presented to bishop Zumárraga to advocate for the construction of a Sanctuary in Tepeyac. In this play, religious devotion blends with Mexican history. In contrast with the representation of the native Americans that we find in the peninsular comedias indianas, in which we observe a conflict between the representation of the indigenes as “the good savage” and “barbarian idolater,” in this piece their characterization is eminently positive. We can consequently state that the author aimed to integrate the two cultures, incorporating Amerindian and Spanish elements
