This article highlights the significant richness of Royal Commentaries as a source of unexpected meanings for every reader and generation. In this case, through the analysis of the passage about asparagus narrated by Inca Garcilaso in Book IX, Ch. XXX, I appreciate the narrator’s position on his mestizo and subaltern condition, one of the fundamental poles of the identity complexity of the writing subject.
