In this article, I discuss the travestismo (crossdressing) of the Peruvian coast in the visual and performative work of Javier Vargas Sotomayor. From a queer and decolonial theoretical framework, I analyze how this artist explores the imaginaries of the coast to recover the indigenous sex/gender dissidence in a territory colonized by extractivist capitalism. I propose that the “Telúricas subterráneas” artistic series (2018) carries out processes of disidentification with cisheteronormativity to reveal the potential of queer utopia.
