This article studies the pre-Avant-garde period of Alberto Hidalgo’s poetic production, between 1914-1919, considering particularly the qualification of “futurist” that was given to his first two books. In this youthful period, his poetry not only showed thematic glimpses of the Italian school, but also modernist formal aspects and a strong egotistical accent. The revision of this moment “without coming of age” of his poetic production demands a new perspective from approaches like Brazilian “antropofagia” of Oswald de Andrade and Cuban “Calibanismo” of Roberto Fernández Retamar.
