From a fieldwork in July 2019 and the compilation of numerous colonial and modern sources, this article reconstructs the cultural history of the Tallán people on the north coast of Peru and the theatrical representation that its inhabitants do each year to affirm their ethnic identity. This representation takes on the appearance of a performative celebration by proposing a particular version of the arrival of the conquerors and the capture of the Inca Atahualpa, challenging the official versions and privileging popular memory as a modeling factor of a marginal social subject, usually forgotten from a centralist point of view.
