Abstract

This work analyzes the rewriting of the story of the white captive Lucía Miranda, present in the stories of the most important chroniclers of the Society of Jesus in the Río de la Plata region in the 18th century: Nicolás del Techo (1673), Pedro Lozano (1730), Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix (1756) and José Guevara (1767). The narration, recorded for the first time in Ruy Díaz de Guzmán's Historia (ca. 1612), is conceptually approached as an “essential fable”, based on a theoretical disquisition of Jorge Luis Borges.
