The recent identification of an Epítome del descubrimiento de la tierra de la Florida (‘A Summary of the discovery of the land of Florida’) as part of Garcilaso’s promotional campaign for his Florida, ten years before its publication, provokes questioning the multiple ways in which the need of patronage marks all his life and works. The eventual publication of La Florida in Lisbon under the protection of the House of Bragança, a surprising solution to his long patronage problems, can be read in conjunction with the 1557 Evora publication of the Relação verdadeira, as both result from analogous political environments. Both works are notorious cases of the rich transborder Iberian culture of the time.
