Some observations on Peruvian Gongorism: the Sanctuary of Fernando de Valverde

Abstract

This paper proposes the possibility of studying Peruvian gongorism at its different stages, from an early and exalted assimilation of stylistic gongorisms to the critical maturity of the Apologético by Juan Espinosa Medrano. I will revise theoretical and practical discussions on the genre of epic poetry posed by Fernando de Valverde in his poem Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Copacabana en el Perú. This examination will reveal that the consolidation of gongorism in Peru was not, as has been thought, without discussions and hesitations regarding the classical methods and the items associated with the new poetry.
