Abstract

This essay analyzes the Lusophone cultural production by Brazilian authors of Japanese origin since the end of WW II, considering it as a tool for epistemic decolonization and social-political empowerment of the Nikkei community, because of being part of a rhetorical strategy: the collective affirmation of citizenship and belonging to the Brazilian nation. The essay argues that these narratives constitute a fundamental part of the elaboration of a Nikkei diaspora identity that is formulated as a counterpoint to the background of official identity discourses of Brazil and Japan. From a chronological perspective, the article discusses that the evolution of the Nikkei national and social conscience of Japanese immigration was marked since its beginnings by what was still perceived as a temporal stay, until the present state of cultural integration and progressive loss of the ethnic affiliation.
