This article introduces a new reading of El lugar sin límites (1966), the novel by José Donoso (1924-1996), arguing that the sociohistorical background that determines its structure is the democratization process that took place in Chile after the Second World War. This process reached its peak with the agrarian reforms of Presidents Eduardo Frei Montalva, in 1967, and Salvador Allende, in 1973, and ended with the coup d’etat of September 11, 1973. The “whorehouse”, which is Donoso’s “place without limits”, is in this context, a sarcastic allegory of the Chilean space.
