Written at the beginning of the 17th century, the Colloquium of the Conversion of the Four Kings of Tlaxcala is a doctrinal play whose argument is based on a historical- legendary episode widely spread at that time in that province. This argument, which justifies the insertion of the text in the Gutiérrez de Luna manuscript, links it to the political and ideological context in which it was composed. However, in the play the legend about the early religious conversion of the Tlaxcalan kings is subordinated to its religious purpose.
