Abstract

We adopt the premise that there exists a strong correlation between the Latin American "neobarroque" and North American "language poetry". The firs referent of the "neobarroque" in Latin America, Julio Herrera y Reissig, was ahead of the "language poetry" of T. S. Eliot, while the latter preceded the pioneering Latin American difficult poetry of José Lezama Lima. Both "neobarroque" writing and "language poetry" go beyond mere representation, setting as their final goal an open and "poli-referential" type of perception which is closely linked to language itself.
