Through an analysis of the poem Madre, nosotros también somos historia (Mother, We, Too, Are History , 1988) by Maya-kaqchikel writer Francisco Morales Santos (Guatemala, 1940), this article explores the poetic voice's journey to his Mayan ethnic origins. I argue that the journey to the origins expresses a critique of modernity and its hegemonic narratives, particularly official historiography and capitalism. On the one hand, I propose to empower and validate the knowledge and prominence of subaltern indigenous peoples from the rural areas, and on the other hand, to develop a process of mental and political dealienation. The article concludes suggesting that the poem, through the Mayan cosmovision, develops a collective subaltern consciousness as condition of possibility for a decolonial anti-capitalist resistance.
