In Peru, since the colonial period, an asymmetric distribution of power and resources has characterized the socioeconomic relationships between autochthonous and western people. In the Amazon region, that situation took place especially since the so-called “rubber boom”. Nowadays this condition is still going on, although the current economic crisis points out the worldwide failure of the development route based on the despoiling capitalistic model. This article manages to present an overview of possible alternative ways to that model, starting from the analysis focused on two novels set in the Peruvian Amazon region: Paiche, by the painter and writer César Calvo de Araujo, and E venne il sabato, by the Italian writer Alberto Manzi.
