Abstract

The present article aims to analyze the strategic use of European narrative traditions displayed by Mier and Lizardi as a way of interrogate the ambiguous place of the Creole men of letters within the crisis of the Colonial system. I argue that these writers configured a displaced enunciation, halfway between liberal reformist discourse and the struggle of traditional values (such as nobility and honor). Mier and Lizardi´s appropriations are studied in the light of the studies by Halperín Donghi, Moraña, Pérez Mejía y Station, and Rojas. These researchers conceive the political cultural quarrel of the Creole men of letters related to the strategic assumption of the European narrative traditions.
