Humanismo en la ciudad mundial: Gaspar de San Agustín
Keywords:

This article studies the intellectual and cultural history of Spanish Manila (1571-1898) with a particular focus on late humanism. By examining the Latin poetry and Tagalog philology of Gaspar de San Agustín (1650-1724), it reveals the en- tanglement of Southeast Asian, European and American traditions in eighteenthcentury Manila. In contrast to the late humanism of continental New Spain, the Filipino manifestation of the tradition has received no scholarly attention, and offers a window on many aspects of contemporary cultural life, including learned culture, missionary life, transpacific religious cults, civic ritual and indigenous poetics.
