The 90 years of the Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality by José Carlos Mariátegui represent a possibility to approach the contemporary Brazilian crisis starting from episodes that have affected the image of the Brazilian left in a peculiar way. Far from having passed the gale of attacks and defenses, the anniversary of this classic of Latin American thought is an excellent moment for this reflection. It is important to inquire into the structural reasons that made possible the outbreak of a crisis that makes Brazil today—living in a situation of institutional malaise and a crisis strongly concentrated in the planes of subjectivity, involving actors, ideas and projects of society, and resting in the triumph of the radical right-wing politician Jair Bolsonaro. We seek to discuss the unfolding of the impeachment of 2016 as an expression of this situation, also seeing it as a reflection of a broader picture, which left the left lose the axis and the capacity for action.
