Abstract

For the first time, this study analyzes the theatrical works performed in Manila during the first half of 18th century. All the plays written by Spanish or local authors are addressed chronologically and the content of each one is briefly commented. I argue that the theater written in Manila was necessarily minor or circumstantial due to the strong censorship and the lack of incentives for literary creativity. However, those plays are extremely meaningful when we take in consideration the ultraperipheral nature of the territory within the Spanish Empire. The article also includes a bibliographical table with all the books of feasts printed during that period inside and outside Manila
