Los viajes desconocidos del Inca Garcilaso

Abstract

 I revisit Inca Garcilaso de la Vega’s cronology during the period from his arrival to Spain in 1560 until when he received the inheritance of his uncle Alonso de Vargas (1586) and was able to improve his economic situation. I will present documents recently founded, unknown until now, under the name of Memorial del Capitán Garcilaso de la Vega, which covers the years 1583-1586 (Simancas General Archive). The Memorial shows the possibility of a long militar career and travels around the Mediterranean area of the Spanish empire, linked to the Lisboa lands, with a position as Captain at the Tercera island, which he helped to conquer. The founding of the document allows a new reading of the relationship between Inca Garcilaso and Portugal.
