Narrativas de conciliación: subjetividad intercultural en la Historia de Tlaxcala de Diego Muñoz Camargo

Abstract

This essay argues that Diego Muñoz Camargo’s Historia de Tlaxcala disconfirms
the concept of mestizo chronicle developed by Martin Lienhard, proposing instead
to look at intercultural subjectivity. Intercultural subjectivity refers to the individual who learns to function in the dominant culture while retaining the cultural identity of the subjected group. It also argues that the intercultural discourse in the text must be understood in terms of positionality (the status of the researcher as insider or outsider in relation to the social group studied). Muñoz Camargo wrote at the service of Tlaxcala as another Tlaxcalan, but he used a Spanish identity in order to defend Tlaxcalan interests.
