Throughout contemporary research on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the repetitive desire to assign a gender marker to the seventeenth-century Mexican nun stands out. The present study offers a revisionist reading that contextualizes Sor Juana’s writing in its historical period. In doing so, her writing reveals the search for an authentically liberated voice, an evolution which, in the end, reveals a person who transcends the limitations of gender.
