I analyze the story “Our last five days under the yoke of Japan” by the Spanish- Filipino author María Paz Zamora-Mascuñana. The text was written in the aftermath of the Japanese occupation of Manila during World War II and shows the conflicts of race and class inherent in the social position of its author. Also, the article addresses aspects of the work from the discipline of Sound Studies, pointing out the mechanisms of sound memory that play a central role in the development of the story.
