Abstract

The play Noches lúgubres by José Cadalso was published in 1789. It is a dialogue in prose without stage notes that invites to think not only about its theatrical condition but also its literary one. Noches lúgubres’ reputation traveled across the ocean and arrives to the Coliseo de Buenos Aires in 1824, where it was adapted by Luis Ambrosio Morante. He was an actor and stage director in the Coliseo. Morante built a scenic micropoetics that contains explicit stage notes. Tediatoy Lorenzo’s manuscript can be found at the Tesoro of the National Library. This study focuses on the comparison of both texts. The objective is to make an approach to preromantic theatre in Río de la Plata.
