El largo camino de Castilla (2020), by Peruvian writer Eduardo González Viaña, rebuilds, following the typology of the new historical novel, the political, social and ideological evolution of Ramón Castilla, who was president of Peru, and one of the authors of its independency. Through a very long journey, that leads him from his exile in Buenos Aires to the Peruvian capital, in a route that includes great part of the inaccessible geography of the American continent, the young military will be able to witness the brutality applied to the indigenous people, slavery, torture, rape or the indiscriminate abuse against the natives. At the same time, he experiences the “ecocide” against Nature and natural resources. During this trip, Castilla will have an internal dissemination of spiritual and political pilgrimage that will provide a necessary transformation and metamorphosis of the character. He will change from being a loyal member of the realistic forces, defender of the Spaniard empire, to become one of the Peruvian independency
forefathers.
