Cartografías de archivo: elipsis y metonimia en la escritura de Hernán Cortés
Keywords:
silence, archive, Cortesian writing, Letters from MéxicoAbstract
Much has been said and written regarding the Conquest of Mexico and its documents. Nowadays, much is being revisited, in connection to the 5th Centenary of the Cortesian expedition (1519-2019) and the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan (1521-2021). This essay aims to intervene in the debate by rethinking Cortesian writing, especially his Letters from México and other documents. Our goal is to understand how Cortesian writings organize what is said and what is silenced; how rhetorical figures such as metonymic and ellipsis shape these writings and,
at the same time, give birth to a persistent narrative of the American experience
