The Onanya are the doctors and visionary sages of the indigenous Shipibo- Konibo nation of the Peruvian Amazon. The present work explores the medicinal songs of the Onanya in order to account for the interweaving of modern and ancestral images in the imaginations of these Amazonian sages. The Shipibo nation, and even its traditional medicine system, cannot be thought of outside the influences and impositions exerted by modernity. However, Onanya doctors do not accept these influences passively, but they manage to integrate elements of technological modernity into ancestral rationalities through complex poetic strategies of symbolic resignification. Thank to these symbolic strategies, they ward off the dangers of acculturation and propose a heterogeneous form of indigenous modernity.
