Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, the Argentine author Raimunda Torres y Quiroga published fantastic short stories that address the issue of domestic violence. In the present article, we analyze the relationship between aesthetics and politics in her fantastic short stories, focusing particularly on the workings of sounds. The study will reveal how male voices are silenced through powerful female voices, thus destabilizing gender power relations and the authority of the husband. In the sociohistorical and political context, the sounds in these stories serve as both an aesthetic element and a strategy to expose and denaturalize violence against women.
