Antonio de Saavedra Guzmán was the first author born in America to publish a book of poetry in Spain: El peregrino indiano (Madrid, 1599). His epic poem describes the deeds of Hernán Cortés when he conquered Tenochtitlan, juxtaposed with autobiographical episodes in which Saavedra seeks to promote his own personal merits as well as those of his ancestors, and protest his removal from the post of corregidor of Zacatecas. This article analyses unpublished and little-known documents that shed new light on this work and the role that it played in the trials and economic petitions in which Saavedra was involved.
