Rodó's Messiah or the figure of an alternative modernity

Abstract

This article tries to demonstrate that José Enrique Rodó resorts in his writings to the figure of the Messiah to propose an alternative model of modernity different from the progressive model, so that the anti-imperialism of the Uruguayan writer does not simply limit itself to putting the Latin- American idealism up against the North American materialism, but instead distinguishes two different perspectives on modernity.
